Anna Young update 4/3/11

This weekend I did my first race of the year in my MVP Kit at the Marian Classic. Our college hosted the race and after a 45 min criterium on a windy course with two little hills I decided to race again in the Women's open race. It was a smallish field and it split early when I went for a prime. Eventually I ended up away with one girl from a local team, Indy Bike, chasing my collegiate teammate Kaitie Antonneau who races for PB and CO 2010. we weren't able to catch her and she won; I out sprinted Becca from Indy Bike for 2nd. A great way to start what is going to be a great season with MVP Health Care !

Amity Road race

Ryan Nye started the season off with a bang by winning the amity road race this past weekend in Southern Pennsylvania. After missing the winning move that went early in the race, Ryan attacked the main field at the mid way point. He then proceeded to ride solo across the 2+ minute gap to the lead group on the short but very hilly course. He worked with the lead group and fended off late race attacks until the final 200 meters where he opened up the sprint and took the victory!

All week, leading up to our race, the weather forecast looked promising. It called for temperatures in the low 50’s and lots of sunshine. On Sunday morning we packed our race bags accordingly. The sun was shining outside and it was balmy, compared to the cold snow of the weekend before. When we got to our race, however, the temperature had dropped to below forty degrees! Thankfully, experience taught us to always back extra clothing for inclement weather.

Everyone was shivering on the starting line and eager to get moving. We warmed up quickly, as the race started on a long 3 mile climb. At the top of the climb we blazed down a 2 mile descent, turned the corner and began the long 3 mile climb again. Ryan’s race did seven laps of the five mile course and Janel’s race did five. Despite the short race distance, it turned out to be a hard race because of the repeated, long climb. Ryan started his race strong and was with the top riders. Then, he had a mechanical issue with his chain. He had to stop and repair it quickly but by then the lead riders had opened up enough lead so he finished in the middle of the group. Meanwhile, Janel was pleased to finish third in her race. We look forward to next weekend when we will have the opportunity to compete on the same race course and hopefully improve our finishing places! - Janel
